Tropical Vibes & Coastal Views: A Magical Weekend at Abbotsbury Subtropical Gardens

There is something truly surreal about standing amidst palm trees and exotic blooms while looking out over the rugged, iconic sweep of Chesil Beach. This past weekend, we had the absolute pleasure of taking Scout & Hunter to the magnificent Abbotsbury Subtropical Gardens in Dorset.

If you’ve never been, picture this: a 20-acre garden filled with rare plants from across the globe, tucked into a sheltered valley that feels more like the Mediterranean than the Jurassic Coast. It was the perfect backdrop for a wedding that celebrated both the wild beauty of nature and the refined craft of artisanal catering.

Coastal Toasts and Dorset Sparkle

The celebrations kicked off with reception drinks on the West Lawn, where the sea breeze mingled with the scent of tropical flora. To keep things local and a little bit legendary, the couple chose to serve "Dorsecco": the fabulous sparkling cider from the West Milton Cider Co.

For those who haven’t had the pleasure, Dorsecco is Dorset’s answer to Prosecco. It’s crisp, elegant, and carries that unmistakable West Country soul. It was the perfect ice-breaker as guests soaked in the views, but let’s be honest: while the drinks were flowing, it was the crafted cocktail canapés that really stole the show.

Canapés That Flew Off the Boards

As caterers, we love the "canapé hour." It’s the first taste of the day’s culinary narrative. This weekend, our menu was a perfect reflection of the Scout & Hunter partnership: a balance of fire-cooked indulgence and refined, plant-based artistry.

On one side, we had the "Hunter’s" favorites: our signature meat sausage rolls and mini Yorkshire puddings topped with succulent beef. They were the ultimate comfort bites, packed with local provenance and that deep, savory flavor only open-flame cooking and expert sourcing can provide.

But the real "hit" of the afternoon? The "Scout’s" mushroom and goat’s cheese arancini. These golden, crispy spheres of delight were flying off the boards faster than we could bring them out. The earthy richness of the mushrooms paired with the tang of the goat’s cheese is a combination that never fails to impress. Alongside our veggie sausage rolls, they ensured that our plant-based offerings were every bit as sought-after as the meat.

The Art of the Shared Feast

Once the coastal views were thoroughly admired, guests moved through the lush greenery to the dining area. For the main event, the couple opted for our light grazing stations and sharing boards.

There is a particular magic in social finger food and sharing platters. It breaks down the formal barriers of a wedding, encouraging guests to chat, reach across the table, and connect over a mutual love of great food. Our grazing boards were a vibrant tapestry of local cheeses, cured meats, artisan breads, and the "Scout’s" signature deli-style salads.

We paired these with bowls of fresh, seasonal pasta sides that added a hearty, comforting element to the spread. Seeing the whole lot sharing, chatting, and laughing over the food is exactly why we do what we do. It wasn't just a meal; it was a conversation starter.

Fueling the Dance Floor: The Blacksheep Bar Co.

As the sun began to dip behind the palms, the energy shifted. It was time for the band to take the stage and for the dancing to begin. To keep the spirits high, we switched gears and launched The Blacksheep Bar Co.

Our bar setup is designed to be as much of a feature as the food. With a sleek palette of black, tan, and light blue, it looked right at home against the tropical foliage of Abbotsbury. Whether it was crafting bespoke cocktails or pouring local ales, our professional event staff kept the party fueled and the vibes high.

But as every seasoned wedding guest knows, dancing is hungry work.

Late Night Street Food: The Pizza Finale

Around 9:00 PM, the familiar scent of wood smoke began to waft through the gardens. Our stone-baked pizzas are the ultimate late-night fuel. Cooked live over the flames, these pizzas are the "Hunter’s" time to shine.

Thin, crispy, and topped with the finest local ingredients, they were the perfect antidote to a few hours on the dance floor. There’s something incredibly satisfying about grabbing a hot slice of pizza while the band plays on: it’s the "highlight people still talk about" long after the last song ends.

Why Abbotsbury Subtropical Gardens?

Choosing a venue like Abbotsbury Subtropical Gardens means embracing the unexpected. It’s a place where you can have a "destination wedding" feel without leaving Dorset. For us at Scout & Hunter, it’s a dream to work in a space that values natural beauty as much as we value ethically and locally-sourced foods.

Our two-chef partnership thrives in these environments. Whether we are hand-picking foraged ingredients for a delicate salad or managing a roaring fire for the evening's street food, our goal is always the same: to create a highly memorable culinary experience that feels like a natural extension of your celebration.

The weekend at Abbotsbury was a beautiful reminder of why we do what we do. The views were breathtaking, the gardens were lush, but it was the shared laughter over a grazing board and the frantic energy of a dance floor fueled by pizza that truly made it magical.

Until next time, Dorset!
